Berkeley College will acknowledge the legacy of African Americans in honor of Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the liberation of enslaved Americans and is celebrated annually on June 19. In addition to observing the day with a campus-wide closure on Friday, June 18, 2021, a measure that was adopted by the College on the recommendation of its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force in November 2020, Berkeley will sponsor events that highlight the significance and importance of Juneteenth.
The webinars listed below provide an opportunity to learn more about African American history and reflect on ways to promote equality, justice and inclusion.
Protecting Our Black Women: Human Sex Trafficking

Description: Join Berkeley College students Rebekah Andrews-Brannock, Cadjnie Cameau, and May 2021 graduate Keyry Broncano, as they share their presentation, titled, “Modern Day Slavery: The Untold Story of Human Sex Trafficked Black Females,” for which they were recently awarded an honorable mention at the Black Inventors Hall of Fame Collegiate Challenge, hosted in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

A Conversation with Adrian Council, Sr.: The Significance of Juneteenth

Description: Join Adrian Council, Sr., Publisher/CEO of The Positive Community magazine, for a viewing of “We’ve Come This Far by Faith: The African American Cultural Narrative,” a short video highlighting the historical trajectory of Black Americans in this country. A discussion that includes analysis of African American contributions to society and the significance of Juneteenth will follow, along with a question and answer session with the audience.
