Iessa J. Sutton, Campus Operating Officer for Berkeley’s Newark and Woodbridge campuses, talks about the changing needs of both students and the professional world, as well as the future of education.

How has Berkeley adapted to the changing needs of students and the changing demands of the professional world?

Berkeley College has continued doing an exceptional job at moving with this fast-changing world. Our students, faculty, and staff are remarkable at adapting successfully to a rapidly changing environment by managing unexpected situations, embracing technology, and keeping the institution’s mission and values at top of mind. Staying abreast of industry trends, fluctuation in employment requirements and using industry research to develop and enhance programming has afforded Berkeley College the ability to stay relevant in the midst of change.

How do Berkeley campuses differ from one another?

All of the Berkeley College campuses have a diverse population. That being said, it’s the cultural differences that enrich each and every campus and contribute to the success of our students. And while this is true, we very much embrace the “One Berkeley” model and the differences between campuses are not that apparent.

How does Berkeley stand out from other colleges?

Berkeley College stands out from other colleges with the strong level of support and the family environment. From the moment you walk through the doors and step on to the campus, you are immediately embraced with a warm welcome and the feeling of belonging. Everyone on the campus is family and that feeling remains even after graduation. We also have a strong Alumni Association with robust participation, and lifetime career assistance for graduates.

How do you see higher education changing in the future?

Higher education is in the midst of change as we speak. Brick and mortar learning has expanded to having a more technology-focused classroom. Students have their learning experience further meet their interests and time constraints, and faculty are expanding beyond their linear teaching by engaging students who learn best in other ways. It is vital that educators recognize the needs and challenges of today’s student, and embrace learning methods that meet the requirements of same.
