HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT EMERGING CAREER FIELDS
FROM PROFESSIONALS AND BERKELEY COLLEGE ALUMNI
DURING VIRTUAL SUMMER CAREER WORKSHOPS

“It’s really important to follow your passion. If you’re not happy, you’re not going to be successful.”
– The Hon. Barbara Stanton, Superior Court Judge, Passaic County

Berkeley College sought to help high school students find a career they can be passionate about by introducing them to dynamic and emerging fields such as national security, healthcare, fashion and game design as part of Berkeley College’s Virtual Summer Career Workshop series, held July 12 to 15, 2021. According to a 2019 study*, only about half of employees in the United States are happy in their jobs.

More than 150 high school students from the tristate area participated in the workshops, which also provided virtual tours of Berkeley College campus facilities, including healthcare laboratories and The Gallery at Woodland Park, where the work of interior and graphic design students is displayed.

Jose Montalvo, MD, Chair, Health Sciences, Berkeley College School of Health Studies, and Hannah Huschens, a Medical Assistant student, spoke about the excitement of working in the medical field at the Healthcare workshop. Huschens also demonstrated the correct way to give a patient an electrocardiogram (EKG) in one of the College’s laboratories.

“After having many different jobs, I discovered that my passion is helping people,” Huschens said. “The Medical Assistant field is a good stepping stone to get a feel of the medical field, and will help me decide where I want to go next.”

Kathy Lopez, a 2016 Berkeley College graduate, told high school students she was pursuing a degree in accounting at another college, but could not envision wasting her creative talent. She transferred to Berkeley College’s Graphic Design program, where she obtained a two-year internship at watch producer Movado. Now she works as a Packaging Designer with Tru Fragrance & Beauty, which creates designs for products sold in Bath and Body Works, Target, Old Navy and other retailers.

“The whole time I was in my internship and completing my schoolwork, I was building my portfolio,” Lopez said, at the Graphic Design and Game Design workshop.
