José A. Tavares

Jose's professional experience encompasses 27 years of banking, finance, marketing, and new business development at the Sumitomo Corporation of America, the Chase Manhattan Bank, the Bankers Trust Company, and Citibank. Jose began his professional career at the Gannett Group in 1978. In 1980 he was recruited by Citibank as a Management Trainee in the International Financial Institutions Group—the division responsible for managing Citibank's relationships with banks, corporations, and public sector entities in Latin America. Between 1980 and 1991, he held numerous positions from Operations Officer to Vice President. In 1992 he became Vice President and Senior Relationship Officer for Brazil in the Latin America Private Bank at Bankers Trust. In 1993, he became Vice President and Brazil Team Leader in the International Private Bank at the Chase Manhattan Bank. In 1997, he joined the Sumitomo Corporation of America as Vice President for Latin America Business Development and Coordination. In 2001, Jose was promoted to Senior Vice President, Latin America Operations.

Jose received a B.A. from Lehman College in 1978 and an M.B.A. from The Stern School at New York University in 1991. He is fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish.

In 1989, he was elected to Berkeley College’s Board of Trustees. He was nominated Chairman of the Finance Committee in 1990 and member of the Long Range Planning Committee in 1997, elected member of the Executive Committee in 2000 and Chair of the Nominating Committee on two different occasions. In 2004 he was elected Chairman of the Audit Committee and in 2006 a member of the Nominating Committee and Student Development Committee.

He also serves on the Board of the Havens Relief Fund Society, and the Board of Governors of the YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester.
